It seems that ladders not only allow you to climb mountains but also cross rivers. Now this may well be intentional since it makes sense in the real world but considering that not all games follow real world logic, this may also be a bug.

The way ladders and bridges work at the moment is somewhat odd due to a limitation of the engine, and one that I fully intend to fix when I dig into refactoring the z-index order code.
