1) DO candles cause lag?

2) Since all players start with 10 plus candles, shouldn't candles burn out and vanish after a period when "equipped"? This might solve issues of lag caused by candles placed by people who try once then leave the game, or 100 candles placed by someone.

3) Instead have the street lamp be player craftable as a permanent light, with a larger radius than the candles.

I imagine that lots and lots of candles on-screen might cause some client-side lagging due to how the light map is calculated, but shouldn't be much of an issue.

Redoing the lighting model is going to be my first step into implementing webgl support. This won't be tackled until beta, but will likely be high up on the list of tasks.

Your other point is quite valid, and I will make candles perishable in much the same way that campfires are now and add recipes for the lamps. This should go into the next update. ;)
